From Read a Number Line to Add Three or Four Numbers

1. Read a Number Line; 2. Jump to Add; 3. Jump to a Friendly Ten; 4. Jump Back to Take Away; 5. Count Up to Take Away; 6. Add Three or Four Numbers.

The Tens Then Ones method

On an open number line, jump the tens first with big arcs, then the ones with small arcs. When the ones would cross a ten, stop on the friendly ten first (38 + 7 is 38 to 40, then 5 more). Taking away is the same jumps going back. When two numbers are close, count up from the small one and add the jumps. Adding three or four numbers starts with ten friends, like 6 + 4.

Is this a full curriculum?

It is one complete second grade math skill, taught in six lessons. Each title in the 2nd Grade Math series covers a different skill, and the 2nd Grade Math Small Group Curriculum puts them all into one year.

How do I choose a level?

Start at triangle. If a page is easy and correct, move up to star. If it brings tears, step down to circle. The skills match, so moving is easy.

Do I need any other materials?

A pencil. Helpful: a 0 to 100 number line or a 100 chart for warm ups, and a strip of tape on the floor for a walking number line. Nothing to buy or cut.

Can I print only one level?

Yes. Each lesson has one grown-up page, then the circle, triangle and star pages. The Start Here page lists the exact pages.

How do I get my files?
